Ocean Health On The Global Agenda At The World Economic Forum

Arlington, Va.  – Last week Dr. Greg Stone, the senior vice president and chief scientist for Oceans at Conservation International served as a panelist at an open-session plenary meeting at the 42nd annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) where over 1,600 business leaders, 40 heads of state and hundreds of leaders from academia, the media and non-profit organizations met to discuss the current state of the global economy and address and meet future economic challenges.

Stone, who works to advance the agenda of the WEF Ocean Governance Council, spoke at the interactive plenary session titled, ‘The Ocean Solution,’ which included featured speakers Robert B. Zoellick, President, The World Bank Group, Clarence Otis Jr, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Darden Restaurants, Koji Sekimizu, Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization (IMO) and moderator John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief, The Economist, United Kingdom.

“The vast wealth our oceans can provide has the potential to solve the looming global problems of the 21st century,” Stone said. “Before they can feed and provide livelihoods for our growing population, we must first be able to understand what their limits are and how we can restore their abundance and health to an optimal level.”

The oceans act as the Earth’s primary life support system. They are responsible for providing a whole host of ecosystem services which include the provision of seafood, biodiversity, clean water, and oxygen of which they supply over 50% to the air we breathe. It is these services and others that make the planet a livable and prosperous place for people and societies.  As the demands on the oceans increase, however, so too do the impacts on their overall health and ability to provide these critical services.  In particular, through overfishing – FAO data shows that 53% of marine fishery stocks are fully exploited with no room for further expansion; 28% are overexploited; 3% are depleted; and 1% are recovering from depletion and require plans for rebuilding.

Currently, 1 billion people depend on fish for essential nutrition. In 1997, is was estimated, using the entire World’s GDP, that the ocean provides over $ 21 trillion (Costanza et al) of unaccounted value to the world economy – these are goods and services that are supplied to mankind for free; today this value would be much higher. A 2010 UN study has estimated that by the year 2050 the global population will reach 9 billion people and will include 3 billion new people in a middle class that will total 5 billion.

“Participating in this discussion at the World Economic Forum is a sign that the health of our oceans is finally on the global agenda,” Stone said. “With our population growing and becoming more prosperous, how the health of mankind is closely linked to the health of oceans is an issue we can no longer afford to put off.”

South Korea Prime Minister Visits Masdar ahead of Keynote Address at World Future Energy Summit

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates–()–Today, South Korean Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik, in Abu Dhabi to
deliver a keynote address during the opening ceremony of the World
Future Energy Summit (WFES) on January 16, toured Masdar,
Abu Dhabi’s multifaceted renewable energy company. The Prime Minister
experienced firsthand the strategic long-term commitment Abu Dhabi is
making to accelerate the development, adoption and deployment of clean
technology and renewable energy.

“Renewable Energy has been a topmost priority on the South Korea agenda
– as a country that has prided itself throughout the years for great
innovations – it only made perfect sense for Korea to be strongly
represented in a Summit that focuses on powering innovation.”

During the visit, Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik toured Masdar City and
the campus of the Masdar Institute of Science and technology – the
Middle East’s first home grown, graduate level research driven institute
dedicated to renewable energy and clean technologies.

The visit to Masdar precedes the Prime Minister’s keynote address at the
World Future Energy Summit, where he will join recently announced
keynote speakers Chinese Premier HE Wen Jiabao and Secretary General of
the United Nations, HE Ban Ki-moon.

Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik, a lawyer and politician, is a strong
supporter of renewable energy and is working to create a green economy
focused on economic development and job growth. He assumed the post of
South Korean prime minister in October 2010.

The visit by the Prime Minister underscores the growing relationship
between the UAE and South Korea especially in the areas of renewable
energy, training, education, construction, shipbuilding, semiconductors,
information technology and telecommunications. The UAE established
bilateral relations with the Republic of Korea early in 1980 and these
relations have witnessed continued development at all levels and have
facilitated an exchange of experience in various fields.

Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik said, “For over 3 decades now, the UAE has
been a trusted and reliable partner to South Korea. The UAE has always
been a meeting and dialogue hub between east and west –The World Future
Energy Summit is just another demonstration of the country’s convening
power.

“Renewable Energy has been a topmost priority on the South Korea agenda
– as a country that has prided itself throughout the years for great
innovations – it only made perfect sense for Korea to be strongly
represented in a Summit that focuses on powering innovation.”

South Korea aims to generate 11% of energy from renewables by 2030. This
is compared with a current figure of 2.46% – achievement of these
targets would be four times more than current levels.

The country has earmarked $ 891.2 million in support of renewable energy
projects and financing including building solar and wind power energy
facilities.

Asia’s fourth-largest economy has also announced that it would
strengthen its new and renewable energy sectors, expecting the sectors
to achieve exports of $ 40 billion in 2015 compared with $ 4.6 billion in
2009.

Dr.
Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber
, CEO of Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy
company said, “The deep rooted partnership that the UAE shares with
South Korea is further strengthened by this visit of Prime Minister Kim
Hwang-sik. Collaborations with like-minded countries are at the core of
the strategy of our wise and visionary leadership of Abu Dhabi and
Masdar is proud to be able to build upon such partnerships.”

In March 2011, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and South Korea’s
Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) signed a memorandum of
understanding to develop synergistic partnerships between UAE think
tanks, businesses and Korean counterparts. On July 7, 2011 GGGI
inaugurated its Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional office in
Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City.

GGGI and the UAE are focusing on developing and implementing specialized
training programs to educate workers on issues surrounding green growth.
As well as developing tailor-made low carbon green growth models for oil
rich and non-Annex I countries with the aim of meeting achievable
greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in the future.

The GGGI Abu Dhabi office serves as a regional hub in tackling issues
such as climate change and economic development throughout the Middle
East and North Africa.

For 2012, the South Korean government has set a standard to generate
2.61 percent of its electricity from renewable energy with a goal to
increase to 6 percent by 2020. This is significant because South Korea
as a developing country has committed to and is investing in
diversifying their energy mix.

Now in its fifth year, WFES, taking place from January 16-19, is the
world’s foremost annual meeting committed to promoting advancement of
renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the water and waste sectors by
engaging political, business, finance, academic and industry leaders to
drive innovation, business and investment opportunities in response to
the growing need for sustainable energy.

More than 26,000 attendees, including 3,000 delegates, 650 exhibiting
companies and 20 national pavilions, are expected to participate in the
summit.

Mild winter turns natural world on its head

Signs of early spring , Crocus tommasinianus flowering
Crocus tommasinianus flowering at least a month early in January at East Lambrook Manor Gardens, Somerset, where the mild winter weather has seen many flower species flower much earlier than usual. Photograph: Ben Birchall/PA

Spring flowers are blooming, hay-fever sufferers are suffering from catkin pollen, bats, frogs and hedgehogs have not yet gone into hibernation, and around the country people are reporting the strange sound of the dawn chorus in the normally bleak January mornings.

Once again the natural world has been turned on its head by an unusually mild winter, perhaps accentuated by a previously mild autumn which seemed to prolong spring for most of 2011.

That things are not as they traditionally “should be” is unquestioned. Ecologists, conservation charities and nature lovers responding to the Guardian’s Twitter appeal for #earlyspring sightings report an incredible range and spread of flowers, insects, birds and animals blooming, singing, nesting, mating, or simply being awake when they shouldn not be.

The National Trust, one of the UK’s biggest land owners, sent news of frog spawn, wild garlic, snowdrops and daffodils which have passed their prime on the Gower peninsula in south Wales, wood pigeons mating and fledging their young near the charity’s headquarters in Swindon, camellias and magnolia in south west England, hawthorn flowering high up in the Yorkshire Dales, and a blackbird singing over the Tower of London just before Christmas.

Readers sent in reports of hedgehogs active in Cumbria, bees which have not yet clustered and so remained busy throughout the mild winter, a small tortoiseshell butterfly on Ambleside in Cumbria, ladybirds in Derbyshire, narcissus in Dorset, primroses in flower since before Christmas in south Gloucestershire, more daffodils and snowdrops, and a fig tree already in leaf.

Perhaps the most incredible of all is a sighting of a juvenile slowworm at the London Wetlands centre in Barnes, a species usually expected in March at the earliest, and though to be a record early sighting of a reptile in the region.

Unusual sightings are not unusual. But the scale and range of oddities appears to mark out this year as significantly different. At the Barnes wetlands, ecologist Richard Bullock said as well as catkins and blackthorn flowering, garden birds like robins, wrens, blackbirds, song thrush, blue tits and great tits were noisier than usual and many were marking out territories, both signs of planning to breed, while starlings had been seen coming and going from building nests already, and maybe even thinking about laying.

The RSPB meanwhile said it has had many calls from people wondering where their garden birds were. The answer, thinks the bird charity, is there are still plenty of insects in the wild so there is no need to seek out food from kindly home owners.

“We have been getting this spring-like activity or behaviour since really up to and after Christmas,” said Bullock, whose colleagues have also seen soprano pipistrelle and Leisler’s bats still active over their usual hibernation period.

Last month the National Trust’s end of year round up of wildlife noted that the then already mild winter ended an extraordinary year, starting with the earliest spring this century, a late hot Indian summer spell, and drought – all of which was a boom for species such as grey seals, large blue butterflies and mining bees, but damaging for frogs, toads and newts. “It has certainly been an unpredictable year of weather and the extreme patterns throughout just a single year continue to provide challenges to our wildlife,” the Trust’s wildlife adviser Matthew Oates said.

Not everybody agrees this is an early spring though. David Paynter, reserve manager at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust Slimbridge reserve in Gloucestershire, says observers could also be seeing signs of a very late winter. As well as animals which have not yet hibernated, WWT reserves are also reporting low numbers of migrating birds such as white footed geese, pochard and Bewick’s swans, suggesting they have been happy to stay in the milder temperatures in northern and eastern Europe. However, a cold snap – such as one which has started on mainland Europe and is forecast to reach the UK this weekend – could force different species to go into hibernation or migrate south and west, said Paynter.

“I wouldn’t have said it was an early spring: I’d like to see a few earlier flowers and a few genuine signs of birds wanting to breed,” he added. “It’s almost in limbo: waiting for winter to happen, and it hasn’t quite happened yet.”

Even if a prolonged cold snap catches out some early flowers, precocious chicks and tired bumblebees, many birds will be able to have more hatchings, and much of the natural world is still waiting for the proper spring. Longer term the question is whether this strange Christmas and new year wildlife heralds a rewriting of the nature books, driven by climate change. A paper in the journal Nature Climate Change this week warns that birds and butterflies – traditional indicators of the wider state of biodiversity in the natural world – are struggling to adapt to their shifting habitats as global temperatures warm.

The first place winner in each category will have their work displayed on the MyPhotoSchool homepage for a month, receive a £25 coupon code to spend against any MyPhotoSchool course, and be entered into the People’s Choice Award for the best photo of the year. The winner of the annual competition will win a DSLR camera.

All MyPhotoSchool courses cost £120, last four weeks and begin on the first Saturday of every month. The beauty of the course being online is that students learn at their own pace, and in the comfort of their own home. Each course includes step by step video tutorials, downloadable course notes, and the facility to chat with tutors and fellow classmates online, in a ‘virtual classroom’. The classroom may be ‘virtual’ but the camaraderie is real, and the technology is very intuitive and easy to use.

World renowned photographer Sue Bishop will be teaching ‘Flower Photography’ and ‘Improve your Landscapes’ courses at MyPhotoSchool, and is also a tutor at MyGardenSchool. She says: “MyPhotoSchool is a great opportunity for me to share my passion for photography, using the very latest digital means, with students from all over the world. I know from my experience at MyGardenSchool that it’s an energising experience to have enthusiastic new students every month, and I look forward to welcoming them at MyPhotoSchool.”
