Fisher Tomlin and Bowyer celebrate Garden Designer of the Year title

Leading Surrey-based garden designers Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer are celebrating after being named Garden Designers of the Year 2012 at this year’s New Homes Gardens Awards. Not only were they awarded this prestigious title but they also won 4 Gold Awards for garden designs in Wimbledon, the Caribbean and Cyprus winning both the Best Urban Garden and Best International categories.

Founding Director Andrew Fisher Tomlin said “We are particularly pleased to have been recognised for our work overseas which can present its own challenges, not least working in regions where obtaining plants and materials can often be difficult. We’ve recently been commissioned to design projects in the Urals and New Zealand and these awards help us develop this part of our design programme alongside our more traditional London and Surrey garden design business.”

This is the third time that the garden design company has been named Garden Designer of the Year and has previously won 14 awards for new homes gardens as well as recognition from other organisations both in the UK and from overseas. Fisher Tomlin added “ The future for gardens is very bright. Developers and private individuals are all recognizing the power of great garden design as part of the overall design of new homes in enhancing their lives and providing great value for money.”

Garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin calls for better large garden advice.

Leading UK garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin has made a call for more advice to be available to those people with larger gardens to encourage them to make productive use of their asset and not sell off for development.

Andrew said “As a company we are lucky enough that much of our work is in the green belt around London but increasingly we are finding clients are daunted by the prospect of keeping up a large garden. It might seem like a great problem to have but eventually some of these people start thinking it would be better to sell off part of the garden to developers and whilst we need space for new homes we are also losing a great natural asset.”

Fisher Tomlin believes that whilst there is plenty of focus on small garden design and landscaping there is a growing need to support large garden owners. “ Often the owners of these gardens are coming up for retirement and want the tools to know how to look after the garden as they get older. There are some great organisations like Thrive helping people carry on gardening but more advice on low maintenance ideas would help enormously.”

Andrew’s top five tips for reducing the maintenance and cost of a large garden include:

• Cut out weekly lawn cutting by establishing longer grass areas, planting wild flower plugs and bulbs to encourage wildlife.
• Turn over neglected areas of the garden to orchard trees.
• Share your garden with young people who don’t have their own garden on the basis of sharing the produce that they harvest.
• Introduce more shrubs into borders to reduce the maintenance that has been created by the trend towards big perennial borders.
• Plant with water wise methods using dense planting to retain moisture in the ground and cut down the need for irrigation.

Garden designer, Andrew Fisher Tomlin, reveals new floating bird hide design

International garden design company Fisher Tomlin have just revealed details of a new floating bird hide designed for a wildlife park in Normandy. The unique idea aims to get bird watchers up close and personal with migratory birds on a series of wildfowl lakes at the park. Bird watchers can enter the hide at the bank and then gently float out into the lake without disturbing other wildlife to watch the birds.

Founding Director Andrew Fisher Tomlin said “This has been a bit of a departure from our usual work but a very logical one. We are increasingly involved with designing habitats for wildlife and in recent years have worked on a number of ecological projects including the new wetlands on the London 2012 Athlete’s Village. So designing opportunities for visitors to enjoy the benefits of wildlife habitats is a natural progression.”

Fisher Tomlin have previously designed wildlife houses including a bee hotel for ‘Beyond the hive’ that is now housed next to Smithfield Market in the City of London. The new bird hide will be built and launched in its new location in the near future.

Leading garden designer, Andrew fisher Tomlin, shows how to beat the hosepipe ban

International garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin has reacted to the news of a hosepipe ban from April 5th with some positive ideas for ensuring our plants and gardens get through the drought and continue to thrive.

Fisher Tomlin said “Our company designs and builds gardens in many parts of the world where rainfall is sporadic and we can’t rely from year to year how much rain will come. So we’ve become experts in waterwise planting design not just on hot islands but back here with our garden designs in the UK.”

Andrew’s top tips are:

1. Water correctly – get the water to the plant at the base near to the roots rather than just spraying over the foliage.
2. Water at the right time – evening and very early morning before the sun is up are ideal.
3. Recycle washing up water, a bowl of warm water for a tree can work wonders.
4. Store water – get a water butt to store excess water when it does rain.
5. Plant the right plants – those with silver and pale grey narrow foliage like Lavender, Rosemary and Perovskia are excellent, as are conifers and grasses.
6. Plant in a waterwise way – close together to get a good root system going.
7. Mulch with bark mulch to conserve water in the ground.

A few simple measures can make sure your garden looks as good as last year with less watering.

London designer Fisher Tomlin calls for greater protection of our urban green space

London based garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin has today called for local authorities to create more sustainable green infrastructure strategies. In an article for Time & Leisure Fisher Tomlin said “With all the development that is taking place in London in preparation for the Olympics it’s a disgrace that our local planners are not following the inspirational lead of the Olympic Park and Athlete’s Village and prioritising green space in their own local Olympics planning.”

In his own Borough of Merton he has drawn attention to the lack of any planting in the development of Wimbledon Rail Station as well as naïve planting at recently opened local supermarkets. “ I’m amazed at the approach taken to our local street landscape. With repeated studies showing us what we need to do it wouldn’t have taken much to include a few new trees to help moderate temperatures, improve air quality and support biodiversity in these new development makeovers.”

Two recent reports have highlighted similar issues. According to a pioneering study published by the London Wildlife Trust London’s gardens are being lost at a rate of two and half Hyde Parks a year. A second report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors recommends a push for more green space in towns and cities to reduce urban climate change. Removing 10% of urban green cover could raise maximum temperatures by up to 7%. Fisher Tomlin adds “it’s another great opportunity lost and unfortunately there are no signs that the local planners are going to take notice of the evidence.”
