Memoir by New York Educator Tells of the “Simpler Times”

About the Author

Frank Richard Dufay, Ed. D., received his doctorate in educational administration from New York University in 1963. As an educator, he taught at every level, from kindergarten to elementary, middle school, high school and college. As an administrator, he served as an elementary school principal, an assistant superintendent of schools K-12 and as the executive director of a 5-country regional education center in New York State. Throughout the country, he has lectured, on request, to school districts, service clubs and colleges regarding the need for educational innovation. His book, Ungrading the Elementary School, was an educational best-seller requiring five printings. He co-authored the publication, How Children Learn, published by the New York State Elementary Principals Association.

Although he is pleased with his achievements as an educator, Dufay is deeply aware of his beginnings as the eighth child of immigrant parents from Poland. Growing up in Jersey City, New Jersey, he enjoyed the penny candy store, playing stickball and helping his pop with the moving business.

Ag Energy Coalition Tells Congressmembers That Farm Bill Energy Programs Support Energy Security and Job Creation

WASHINGTON–()–Ryan Stroschein, co-director of the Agriculture Energy Coalition (AgEC),
today urged Members of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on
Conservation, Energy and Forestry to reauthorize Farm Bill energy
programs and provide them with mandatory funding during a hearing on
“Formulation of the 2012 Farm Bill: Energy and Forestry Programs.”
Stroschein’s prepared testimony read:

“Formulation of the 2012 Farm Bill: Energy and Forestry Programs.”

“American agriculture is the key to the successful development and
commercialization of clean, abundant, renewable, domestic energy and
biobased products in this country, and the ‘core’ Farm Bill energy
programs provide American farmers, ranchers and entrepreneurs with the
tools they need to make it happen. This can be a game-changer for rural
economies across the country, with the potential to create hundreds of
thousands of energy-jobs over the coming years.

“Although relatively new, the Farm Bill energy programs already have had
a tremendous positive impact on economic and job growth in rural
America, and they can do so much more. USDA estimates that the BCAP and
Biorefinery Assistance programs alone have the potential to create more
than 700,000 new jobs as a result of increased cellulosic feedstock
production and the construction and operation of new biorefineries.
Furthermore, based on a survey of companies that could potentially
qualify for the Biobased Markets Program, it is estimated that that
program could create an additional 100,000 American jobs in the coming
years.

“If the Federal government retreats from its commitment to clean energy,
in the Farm Bill and elsewhere, the U.S. will risk losing even more
ground to China, Europe, India, Brazil, and other proactive nations, and

TRAID tells of London textile proposal effects on charities and groups

A ‘winner takes all’ stance on the sale of textiles around London might strip charities of the ability to raise funds, textile recycling group TRAID has warned.

TRAID, one of the front-running textile recycling charities operative in the UK, has voiced its concerns after the publication of the report that details proposals for one pan-London consortium contract that would see textiles being collected from bring banks. The idea is currently being investigated by LwaRB, the London Waste and Recycling Board, and London Councils. It has been hoped that moves to a consortia contract might save London local authorities much-needed money through joint procurement.

It has been acknowledged that the position of textile recycling charities must be taken into consideration upon the contract being structured. TRAID still has concerns, though, and says that the contract has the capability of devastating its charitable income while other charities or textile recyclers will also be harmed.

TRAID’s chief executive, Maria Chenoweth-Casey, said that although the details of this proposal aren’t yet clear, its impact definitely is as textiles being tendered out to a highest bidder on a regular basis will mean that charities will become forced to remove every bank they currently have set up on council sites around the capital.

Chenowet-Casey went on to say that TRAID stands to lose around £458,000 in funding revenue per year in the event that it has to remove each one of its 184 textile banks at local authority sites due to the effects of the proposed contract. TRAID’s trading arm operated the textile banks and the charity raises funds entirely-exclusively from collection, reuse and then resale of unwanted textiles.

UNEP tells Durban negotiators fast action on black carbon and other air pollutants can cut rate of global warming in half “Possibly the only way of slowing down climate change in the medium term”

Durban, South Africa, 9 December 2011 – The rate of global warming can be cut almost in half over the next 30 to 60 years with a package of 16 fast-action mitigation measures that reduce two local air pollutants, black carbon soot and ground-level ozone, according to Joseph Alcamo, UNEP’s chief scientist, who set out a fast-action mitigation plan yesterday during the climate negotiations.


Fast action to cut these two local air pollutants will deliver benefits for health and crops, as well as climate, and largely in regions making the cuts, added Achim Steiner, UNEP’s Executive Director, who moderated the presentation, which included ministers from Sweden, Mexico, Ghana, and Canada.


“UNEP’s fast-action agenda is even more important today, and for the next few decades, as prospects recede further into the future for a binding climate agreement,” stated Durwood Zaelke, President of the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development, who is advising various participants at the Durban climate negotiations, which are expected to conclude tonight with limited results.


Achim Steiner agreed, “I can’t see anything in these negotiations that will prevent warming beyond two degrees. We have to find a way to break the impasse.”


“UNEP has shown us the tools to fight near-term climate impacts to protect the world’s most vulnerable people from the worst climate impacts,” added Zaelke. The Swedish environment minister, Lena Ek, who also participated in the UNEP briefing, agreed, noting that UNEP’s fast-action agenda “is possibly the only way of slowing down climate change in the medium term.”


Up to fifty percent of UNEP’s control measures can be implemented at a net cost savings, including measures such as replacing traditional biomass burning stoves with modern efficient stoves and capturing landfill methane. The measures can prevent two million premature deaths a year, mainly women and children.  More than 80% of the health benefits will be in Asia.


Dr. Alcamo explained that cutting these local air pollutants can cut the rate of warming in the Arctic by two-thirds, reducing the risk of passing predicted tipping points for irreversible and possibly catastrophic climate impacts
