Redwood Education Grants Available from Save the Redwoods League

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 01, 2012

Save the Redwoods League, the only nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting ancient redwood forests throughout their natural range, today announced a call for education grant applications from schools, park cooperating associations and other nonprofits that can provide redwood education in and out of the classroom. The League will award up to $ 100,000 total in grants to fund redwood education programs and create opportunities for diverse groups of people to visit and learn about redwood forests.

Save the Redwoods League requests proposals for projects that:

–Provide engaging, firsthand experiences in redwood forests for people of all ages and diverse backgrounds, especially for urban and rural communities.

–Help K–12 classroom teachers teach students about redwoods.

–Foster the sharing of redwood resources or evaluate existing redwood education programs.

–Engage the public in redwood forest research through citizen science projects.

This year, the League is especially interested in proposals that engage the public in redwood forest research through citizen science projects, including those projects that use social media or are initiated, designed and implemented by K–12 students.

“The education grants program plays a key role in the mission of Save the Redwoods League to protect redwoods by making it possible for people of all ages to learn about these forests,” said Emily Burns, Ph.D, director of science for Save the Redwoods League. “Through our call for citizen science projects, the League is encouraging even greater public participation in redwood forest research.”

Since 2000, Save the Redwoods League has awarded more than 300 grants totaling more than $ 1 million to schools, park associations, and environmental education organizations across California. The League’s education program has served more than 445,000 people. Please visit SaveTheRedwoods.org/Education for 2012 application information. The deadline for submission is June 29, 2012.

About Save the Redwoods League

Since 1918, Save the Redwoods League has protected and restored redwood forests and connected people with their peace and beauty so these wonders of the natural world flourish. Unfortunately, some ancient redwoods remain unprotected, and forests that are protected face threats from a changing environment, disease and devastating government budget cuts. Donations help us save these special places, allowing us to purchase redwood land, restore logged forests, research how to best protect them and teach children and adults about these magical expressions of life. To date the League has completed the purchase of more than 189,000 acres of redwood forest and associated land. Environmental organizations call on EPA to eliminate super greenhouse gases from household and small commercial refrigeration

Washington D.C., 1 May 2012. – This past Friday, the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (IGSD) and the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) joined the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in a petition to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to end federal approval of the use of the super greenhouse gas, HFC134a, in household and stand-alone freezers and refrigerators.  HFC134a is known as a super greenhouse gas because this man-made refrigerant has a global warming potential 1,430 times that of CO2.  The petition follows one approved by the EPA filed by the same groups in 2010 to replace HFC134a in mobile vehicle air conditioners with available low-GWP alternatives.   Granting of the petitions will eliminate HFCs with high global warming potential from two of the largest emissions sources.

HFCs are the fastest growing greenhouse gases in many countries including the US, where they grew nearly 9% between 2009 and 2010 compared to 3.6% for CO2. Emissions are growing so fast they threaten to push the climate system past the 2°C outer guardrail for a safe climate in a matter of decades.  Without fast action to limit their growth, the climate forcing of HFCs could equal nearly 20% of CO2 emissions by 2050, or about the same as current annual emissions from transport, and up to 45% of CO2 emissions if CO2 emissions are limited to 450 ppm.

The latest petition requests the EPA delist HFC134a as an acceptable refrigerant, which it approved more than 20 years ago under its Significant New Alternatives Program (SNAP), a program designed to identify safe alternatives for ozone depleting substances phased out under the Montreal Protocol.  The EPA has already approved other alternatives with at least 250 times less impact on the climate than HFC134a while achieving the same or better energy efficiency.

“Cutting HFCs presents the biggest, fastest piece of climate mitigation available to the world in the next few years,” stated Durwood Zaelke, President of the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development. “Approximately 20% of HFC emissions globally come from the refrigeration sector.  Eliminating emissions from new residential refrigerators in the US will bring us a big step closer to eliminating all high GWP HFCs around the globe.”

Also included in the petition is a request that the EPA end the use of HFC134a in other sectors by restricting sale of the gas to EPA-certified technicians, which could reduce emission from vehicle servicing by 40-45%, and ending its use in non-essential products like Dust-Off sprays and string party foam like Silly StringÒ.

The petition can be found here: http://docs.nrdc.org/globalwarming/files/glo_12042701a.pdf

Truck trials to drive down carbon from freight

Industry trials will benefit from £9.5m invested by the Department for Transport and the Technology Strategy Board.

Truck operators are now being invited to bid for a slice of this funding as part of a competition which opens today, April 24.

The ‘Low carbon truck demonstration trial’ will deliver fleets of low-emission heavy goods vehicles as well as supporting infrastructure such as fuelling stations and electric recharging hubs.

Mike Penning said:

“This competition will help drive down emissions from trucks.

“Almost a quarter of carbon from transport in this country comes from heavy goods vehicles, so this is a key area for us to tackle.

“These trials will show us how low-carbon technologies perform day-to-day in the real world, providing vital data to build operator confidence in these green trucks and allowing us to make policy choices based on hard evidence.

“The investment in gas refuelling infrastructure will also give haulage firms a push to buy gas-powered HGVs – leaving a legacy that will support low-carbon transport well into the future.”

Companies wishing to take advantage of the funding have until June 20 to bid for up to £750,000 each.

Trials will run for two years and data collected over this period will be used to inform Government policy on low-carbon road freight.

To qualify for the competition, vehicles must deliver carbon savings of at least 15% compared with the equivalent conventional vehicle. A variety of technologies are eligible for funding under the rules of the competition including gas-powered, dual fuel or hybrid trucks of over 7.5 tonnes and electric vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

Gas refuelling infrastructure funded by the competition will be made accessible to other commercial and public-service vehicle operators, helping to build a network around the country.

Carbon righteousness: how to lever pro-poor benefits from REDD+

Authors:
; iied

Publisher:
[publisher information not available], 2011

A growing focus on mitigating climate change by reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD and REDD+) is prompting the creation of a new form of private property — the ‘carbon right’ — that can be bought and sold in domestic or international markets. But to make REDD+ work for the poor, carbon trading schemes will have to ensure that a wide range of forest-dependent groups and communities benefit. In part, this means carefully assessing how carbon rights are assigned — to ensure they support the rural poor who rarely hold formal land ownership or tenure rights but who are key players in putting sustainable forest management into practice on the ground. It also means rethinking eligibility criteria for REDD+ projects so that they include economic, social and environmental standards and co-benefits.

Notes for editors:

Red Tractor Experts:

ENERGY and ENVIRONMENT: Professor Les Firbank, Independent Director of Red Tractor and University of Leeds.
“British farmers are increasingly looking to use livestock manures and crop residues to fertilize their land and generate energy. Not only does it reduce costs of food production at a time of rising energy prices, it’s great for the environment, as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions created by making and transporting chemical fertilisers and it reduces the risk of pollution to streams and rivers.”

HERD HEALTH: DAIRY FARMING: Derek Kennedy, dairy expert for Red Tractor Assurance says:
“There are a number of initiatives available to dairy farmers to assist them in maintaining the Red Tractor standards of farming procedures, animal health and welfare.

“Proactive Herd Health Planning (HHP) is a fundamental component of the Red Tractor Dairy Farm Assurance Scheme. HHP addresses the elements which are critical to dairy farmers who constantly strive to improve the health and welfare of their cows as well as milk production and improved efficiency. This boosts the economic performance of the business and benefits the environment through lower emissions per unit of milk output.”

NUTRITION: Maureen Strong, Nutrition Manager, BPEX

“Lean pork is a nutrient dense food. It is a rich source of protein and B vitamins, including thiamin, niacin and B12 all of which are vital to health and wellbeing. It is also a source of Vitamin D and minerals particularly iron and zinc.

Pork is now leaner than ever, with an average fat content of just 4% (lean only, fully trimmed of all visible fat). More than 50% of the fat present in pork is unsaturated; the type that is better for you.

The omega 3 polyunsaturate content of pork can be increased by modification of the animal’s diet. These fats are thought to protect against fatal heart disease.”

Illegal Immigration in Arizona is Focus of New Photo Book From Dewi…

New York, NY/ Stockport, England (PRWEB) April 23, 2012

Between 2001 and 2011, 1,911 foreign nationals have died in the deserts of Southern Arizona. All have passed through the doors of the Pima County Forensic Science Center in Tucson, AZ, which faces the task of analyzing and storing their remains, archiving their possessions and hopefully determining their identities.

With his latest work — Left Behind: Life and Death Along the U.S. Border — documentary photographer Jonathan Hollingsworth delivers a sobering look at the illegal immigrants who do not survive the Arizona border crossing and the personal effects they have left behind.

“Photographs are powerful tools to capture ‘moments in time,’ elicit emotion, and in this instance, visually illustrate the struggles individuals face in this period of immigration history in the United States,” said Dr. Gregory Hess, Chief Medical Examiner, Pima County Forensic Science Center.

The photographs take the viewer on a journey through the day-to-day operations of the medical examiner’s office — documenting the receiving area, autopsy room and archive of border crossers’ personal effects. Attention is also given to Green Valley, AZ, through the examination of belongings left on the desert floor by border crossers.

“This book is a way of humanizing the immigration issue we face in the United States,” said Jonathan Hollingsworth, photographer. “It also stands as a memorial to the people who died alone, without ceremony and who often are still unknown.”

The first edition of Left Behind: Life and Death Along the U.S. Border will be available in October 2012 from Dewi Lewis Publishing. The book is available for pre-order now from Amazon.com. For a selection of images from the book and a video, visit http://www.jonathanhollingsworth.com.

Revenue from LED Lighting in Asia Pacific Will Total $11 Billion Through 2021, Forecasts Pike Research

BOULDER, Colo.–()–Lighting is a major consumer of electricity within commercial
buildings, industrial and government facilities, traffic signals, and
signs.
The use of light-emitting diode (LED) products to
lower energy usage and costs is increasing in many countries, including
in the Asia Pacific region, where until recently energy efficient
lighting products have been seen as overly expensive.
Recent
price declines for LED products have changed that market perception
dramatically, and LED is now viewed as an affordable and efficient
technology with long-term benefits.
And in most Asia
Pacific markets, governments are committing large amounts of funding to
basic infrastructure, creating an abundance of business opportunities.

According to a recent report from Pike
Research
, sales of LED lighting systems will increase
rapidly over the next 10 years, accelerating sharply after 2015. Unit
shipments, including lamps and luminaires, will rise from 66 million in
2011 to 542 million in 2021 – an increase of more than 700%.

“Most
Asia Pacific nations are aware of the benefits of adopting LED products.
As a result, they are preparing for or considering policies to
accelerate consumer adoption, such as subsidies, promotion programs for
enterprises, and establishing industry standards.”

That will translate into cumulative revenues of $ 11 billion from
2011 through 2021 for LED lighting in Asia Pacific, the cleantech market
intelligence firm forecasts.

“Policy makers in Asia Pacific believe that improvements to
buildings’ lighting can offer the most visible and easiest to achieve
energy efficiency gains,” says senior analyst Andy Bae.
“Most
Asia Pacific nations are aware of the benefits of adopting LED products.
As a result, they are preparing for or considering policies to
accelerate consumer adoption, such as subsidies, promotion programs for
enterprises, and establishing industry standards.”

Among the frontrunners in energy efficient lighting technology are
Japan, which revealed its plans to lead the LED lighting industry
through its 21st Century Light Project more than a decade ago, and
Taiwan, which has established a Next Generation Light Source Technology
Development & Supply Strategy that calls for a greater reliance on LED
lighting and material production as a national industry, reducing the
traditional focus on the semiconductor industry.
From a
broad view, the Asia Pacific market is fragmented with myriad market
players, each with a particular field of focus: LED chips, LED packages,
LED luminaires, or LED bulbs.

Pike Research’s report, “Energy
Efficient Lighting in Asia Pacific,”
describes the key
technology and market trends that are driving the use of LED and other
high efficiency lighting in the commercial, industrial and outdoor
stationary sectors within the Asia Pacific region. The report analyzes
