BirdLife Europe’s annual Business & Biodiversity event has been the starting point for many fruitful relationships with the corporate world. It has even resulted in concrete Partnership agreements, such as the very successful ongoing Partnership with the extractives company HeidelbergCement. Each year one or two sectors are represented at the event and they give brief testimonials on why working with BirdLife is so valuable to their business.
This year’s edition put special focus on the European golf industry. The newly established Partnership with BirdLife in the Netherlands was introduced to an audience consisting of representatives from a variety of Brussels based consultancies as well as representatives from European Institutions. Golf courses have a questionable reputation when it comes to their impact on the environment, but by working closely with a science based organisation such as BirdLife, assessments can be made of how to improve exiting golf courses. Together we can help plan new developments with minimum harm to the natural environment, including birds and their habitats.
The event took place on the mezzanine in the great dinosaur hall at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels. The location was chosen in consideration of the link between ancient dinosaurs (that fill us with fascination and sometimes dread), and birds – evidence that dinosaurs are still among us. Recent science even shows that many of the dinosaurs were in fact covered in colourful feather dresses and were a far cry from the green lizards we are used to imagining.
Working with local on the ground organisations across the world provides us with a great outreach capacity. Through our partnerships, we have the ability to implement projects involving people who are directly impacted by different environmental measures and who have a long lasting positive impact on the quality of life and the state of the environment. The passion and commitment shared by these local BirdLife Partners was emphasised by Mr Russell Kane, representing Happy Birds Ltd, who gave a brief testimonial during the evening.

WaterFurnace geothermal heat pumps are similar to traditional heat pumps but are more than twice as efficient. Instead of using the outside air, geothermal heat pumps tap into the constant thermal energy stored just below the earth’s surface. A series of underground pipes (an earth loop) circulates an environmentally friendly mixture of alcohol and water to transport that energy. The earth loop brings heat into the home from below ground during the winter and removes heat from the home during the summer, carrying it back into the ground. Using this free energy source can save homeowners as much as 70 percent for heating, cooling and hot water, all without using any on-site fossil fuels or emitting carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or other greenhouse gases.

Exclusive London Event Tomorrow: The Socrates Project gathers VIPs & opinion formers together to face our future
June 24 2013, London, United Kingdom: More than 100 politicians, journalists, sports men, publishers, explorers, journalists and influential opinion formers, have agreed to meet in London tomorrow to address some of the taboo topics addressed by the sci-fi thriller and visionary fiction attracting attention around the world: The Socrates Project.
“We’re gambling on extinction,” writes author Daron Sheehan in his adventure thriller The Socrates Project. “The majority of us are too busy thinking about what’s going to happen tomorrow. We block out longer term worries.”
This book, the first in a trilogy, is a perfect read for anyone who loves outdoor sports, adventure and travel, who wants to preserve our environment, conserve nature, and reduce the threat of pollution on our wildlife. It is for those of us who are prepared to put our heads above the parapet and discuss what could happen when civil unrest hits our streets even more regularly and more violently than it already is, when water is known as ‘blue gold’ and becomes more valuable to millions of us, including in the West, than ‘yellow gold’. The Socrates Project is a riveting fictional story, but it also presents a shocking account of what could be…
High profile international Ambassadors of The Socrates Project
Since the ‘soft launch’ of The Socrates Project just a few months ago, the book (and the concept) has sparked controversy, intrigue and recruited notable Ambassadors, who are keen to spread the word about this revolutionary fictional book, which pushes boundaries and encourages people to think while they read.
Environmentalist Mark Shand says: “This is a fantastic book; it is going to save the environment. The world needs more books like this.”
Max Chaya, the Middle East’s foremost climber and explorer is another Ambassador: “The Socrates Project is a mind-blowing rollercoaster of a novel, which blends gripping adventure with a voyage of discovery. A thrilling read for all ages, this is especially aimed at the next generation who must find the inspiration to come together, like the sicads, to solve these threatening challenges in real life. There is an Everest for Everyone, but this is one mountain we must all climb together!”
Meet the team behind The Socrates Project
Nautilus Media invites opinion formers, celebrities, journalists, politicians, environmentalists, sustainability managers and other opinion formers to join the author, Daron Sheehan, and the rest of the team, on June 25th to celebrate the publication and growing success of The Socrates Project. A lively evening of entertainment, exotic food and drink is planned, inspired by Daron’s global adventures, as well as an author talk and the chance to meet Ambassadors including world record breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont. Members of the media will be given an exclusive goody bag (including a copy of the book), we’ll be raising money for Water Aid UK and ‘Blue Gold’ cocktails will be available. Guest list only.
The birth of The Socrates Project
Daron Sheehan, a successful investment manager, walked away from “the money to discover more important things in life”. After three years travelling around the world and putting his outdoor enthusiasm to the test (sailing, windsurfing, cycling, rock climbing, skiing, kayaking…), he returned to his family home in Buckinghamshire, wrote The Socrates Project and has never looked back.
Enticing James Green, a publisher with decades of experience under his belt, back into the business after sending him the manuscript, set the ball rolling and Nautilus Media was born. Written in both French and English, The Socrates Project has attracted unprecedented attention from overseas, picked up by French and Dutch publishers, and with growing interest from North America.
Daron Sheehan says: “My own journey reflects that of Simon Oceandis (male sicad protagonist); an adventurous voyage of discovery for a somewhat naïve observer. After 16 years of racing to the top of a financial mountain, I finally arrived, looked around and realised that the summit was not what I expected. I don’t know what I had expected but it wasn’t being on a somewhat aloof and lonely mountain surrounded by people with limited vision. A developing love of the outdoors and a few chance occurrences threw me together with some inspirational outdoor guides, educators and explorers from Scotland, France, Lebanon, South Africa and Germany – each highly intelligent and articulate. So, I headed off on a career sabbatical with the support of my wife and family. At the end of the three years I realised I could share the experiences I had been lucky enough to have with others – people like me, investment bankers and others who were distracted by the pursuit of money from what I consider to be more important things in life. My way of doing this was to create the sicads. At first glance the sicads appear as simple robots, as humans appear as humans. As we look more closely, we understand that maybe humans have become self-programmed robots and the sicads are more human than us!”
The Socrates Project is a secret attempt by the United Nations to avert the predicted collapse of our civilisations. Simon Oceandis heads up the sicads, who must blend modern science and ancient wisdom to find the solutions before time runs out.
Not everybody welcomes the Project. An influential secret society plots to discredit and destroy the sicads. Torn between the love of a beautiful scientist and a fiery tribeswoman, Simon discovers an exotic world of adventure and wonder. To find the answers to save humanity, he must undergo a deep inner journey, yet his life becomes a frantic race for survival…
Is it happening? Could it happen? Should it happen? Decide for yourself! Live the story…
“Michael Crichton meets George Orwell” – Ross Leckie
“A masterpiece of storytelling…a gripping tale of adventure…” – Mark Beaumont
