The front-runner for the top Republican spot on the House Energy and Commerce Committee yesterday said he will launch investigations challenging U.S. EPA’s authority over several pollutant regulations next year if the GOP wins the majority in the House. Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), currently ranking member of the Energy Subcommittee, vowed that Republicans will shed “additional light on the regulatory beast” and provide the same “eager” oversight that Democrats performed during the last two years of President George W. Bush’s administration. “They made countless inquiries, requested reams of documents and repeatedly called cabinet secretaries and agency leaders to testify under oath. No program or executive action went unnoticed or unchecked,” Upton wrote in an opinion editorial in The Washington Times. “Oddly, we have not seen the same enthusiasm since the Obama administration has taken the helm.”
